Interview with Quinn Loftis

Published 2014-09-10.
What is your writing process?
My first course of action is to always pick characters names first. If I have a name for a character then I can begin to flesh out their personality. I don't usually do an outline of any kind until I'm about 30,000 words into a novel.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book that I ever read that truly had an impact on me was A Wrinkle in Time. After read that book I realized just how cool creating a world that doesn't exist is.
How do you approach cover design?
I want my covers to reflect the book as much as possible. It drives me crazy when I buy a book and the cover has nothing to do with the content. That's why I redid Call Me Crazy's cover three times, it just didn't fit...until now. Whether we want to admit it or not, in the ebook industry book covers sell the books initially.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
A Wrinkle in Time -Fist paranormal book that really made me want to be a writer.
Harry Potter Series- how can it not be on the list?
Pride and Prejudice- Jane Austen...enough said.
Twilight- Because it gave me the start into reading YA Paranormal which is how I finally decided to write my first novel.
Bible- Because it's the living, breathing Word of God.
What do you read for pleasure?
Young Adult Paranormal Romance,
Mystery/Thrillers
Fantasy/Sci-fi
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Used to be an iPad but my old eyes couldn't stand the glare so now I have a Kindle paper white which I love.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Bloggers. Some authors wouldn't agree, but I know that the majority of my fan base was grown through bloggers having me on their sites.
Describe your desk
Hmmm...organized chaos
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was a military brat so we moved every three years until I was 12 when my parents retired from the military. From there we lived in Greenville, which is my mother's home town. That is where I met my three best friends, of whom the Grey Wolves girls, Jen, Jacque and Sally are based off of.
When did you first start writing?
I've always written poetry and short stories for as long as I can remember. I remember being in school in third grad and learning creative and descriptive writing and thought how fun it was. I really thought that if I could do anything for a living it would be to write.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Book 2 in the Gypsy Healers Series, Wolf of Stone. It is the continuation of the new journey that Peri and her band of wolves, fae and healers are on. It focuses primarily on Dalton and Jewel's story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Having creative control, but also being able to get published without having to wait years to get an agent or publisher.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
On so many levels. Having smashwords be my book distributor has been great because I don't have to keep track of multiple platforms, smashwords does it for me. I get to work with real people and not wonder how many days it will be before someone gets back in touch with me when I email them about a concern or question. The royalty rate is better because smashwords negotiates them and as an author, from what I can tell on other platforms we don't have that kind of pull. I'm able to give away a lot more free ecopies because of the coupon system, when I do give away's on other platforms I have to pay for the books myself. Smashwords just makes my job easier so that I can do what's most important- write.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Finding out from readers how my characters and stories have impacted their lives. I write to entertain, but I also write in the hopes that I can make someones day brighter, and better. I write so that I can give hope (yep even in my werewolf fiction, there is an underlying message...sneaky little author).
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I could write books if I had no readers. It wouldn't be near as much fun or challenging, but I could do it. What I couldn't do was learn, or grow as a writer, nor could I make a living doing what I love.
