What are your optimal working conditions?
When you consider that I wrote the majority of my manuscripts while incarcerated, I am able to write almost anywhere as long as I have a pen and paper. I am now writing directly on the computer, which is much easier, but my desk is rickety and small, located in our bedroom and in poor light.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Yorba Linda, California. It is a bedroom community in North Orange County. It was a place that people thought was safe. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't safe. I was beaten, raped and left for dead by a neighbor when I was ten years old. That trauma led to my drug addiction, which led to my incarceration, which years later, led to my writing. Everything happens for a reason I am told. But I think that is just something people say when they can't find anything meaningful to say. I am happy in my life today, But I would drop that horror as a child if I could.
